Cold Rolled Steel Sheet Hardness

The most commonly available of the cold rolled steels it has a good combination of all of the typical traits of steel strength some ductility and comparative ease of welding and machining.

Cold rolled steels can also be specified as dent resistant dr or bake hardenable bh for applications that require dent resistance after forming and painting. It is recommended and generally used in applications where sheet steel s broader chemical and physical tolerances will permit. This is a prime quality low carbon cold rolled commercial finish steel sheet which has been cold reduced to gage and hardness as indicated. However after the cold reduced product is annealed heated to high temperatures it becomes very soft and formable.

The finished material appears dark gray and has a smooth reflective surface that is resistant to corrosion thanks to a stable oxidation film on the surface of the finished steel. The cold reduction operation induces very high strains work hardening into the sheet. Crcq is available in coil sheet or strip formed with various gauge ranges widths and hardness. Thus the sheet not only becomes thinner but also becomes much harder less ductile and very difficult to form.

Materials ranging from the sheet metal in cars to the tubing in bicycle frames can be created from cold rolled steel. Cold rolled commercial quality sheet or coil steel supplied for either exposed or unexposed applications where bending welding forming or moderate drawing is involved. It is priced lower than genuine cold rolled strip steel. See table 3 page 3.

However this cannot be said about cold rolled sheet and hot rolled sheet. Commercial steel ds types a b and c. Chemically it is very similar to a36 hot rolled steel but the cold rolling process creates a better surface finish and better properties. With these two products the cold rolled product has low carbon content and it is typically annealed making it softer than hot rolled sheet.
